My boyfriend wanted to start locks but his has is down his back. Every professional hairstylist he has went to has told he that he would need to cut his hair in order to lock it. Also every person I've seen that attempted to lock their long hair ended up with bad looking dreds. Their dreds would only be locked at the ends, but the roots would like that matted, straight hair.

It's possible! I've seen it on youtube! The "Backcombing Method"! Or 2 strand twist! It just takes longer & the "Ugly fase" may last a little longer

Back combing is really for caucasion hair, or straight hair.

My loctician does a great job of keeping up my locs in between times I re twist it. He likes starting locs on longer hair b/c it is a faster process. My hair was about 22 inches when I started and they don't look bad. Sister locs should be fine at any length b/c of how they are installed. you'll just end up paying more at most places b/c they will want to charge you by how much length you have.
