Topic: Shea Butter mix growing fungus? Posted: Sep 18 2011 at 8:44pm |
|
I made a shea butter mix for twisting my
hair about a month ago in a cup. It had eco styler gel, shea butter,
castor oil, aloe vera juice, castor oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and
tea tree oil. That was left out and it was doing fine.
So i moved into school and made another batch but larger, and had it in
a plastic container with a lid, and it sat in a drawer. It was fine for
the first week, but it's the third week and I noticed it was darker and
had some fuzz growing in it. what happened? I just put it in my fridge,
hoping that would make it stop, and I'm gonna keep the lid off of it. I
had placed my first batch in a fridge the night I made it, but just
left it out in the open after that...
maybe keeping it in a closed space caused the growing fuzz? it's just that I never heard of this happening before...

Could be the aloe vera juice or coconut oil. These 2 items have molded on me before if I don't keep them refrigerated. I think once they have been opened, they are supposed to be refrigerated. I would just keep your mixes and in the fridge from now on and you should be fine.

Not sure of the ingredients of the eco styler gel but the emulsion of water [aloe vera juice] + the oils/butter without any preservative is a breeding ground for fungus. Although tea tree is antibacterial, it should not be seen as a preservative in such mixes.
There are some factors which could contribute to the growth of fungus too: * was the container sterile?
I would advise that there is no need to keep this mix. Refrigeration will not help as the fungus is already present. It might be better to make small batches that you can use quite quickly.

Coconut oil is fine to use with your shea mix.

Coconut Oil is fine. But It's the Fresh aloe where you might be running into some trouble at. Because Coconut Oil is like regular oil, alot of people used it to cook with so, doesn't really go bad or grow fungus. When is the last time you saw some oil grow fungus or bad? or even crisco for that matter. But the Aloe, that is another case all together. It can go bad. Hope this helps.

My mix contains the Unrefined Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, Rosemary Oil, Tea Tree Oil, & Peppermint Oil! & I was afraid that it would start getting moldy but I learned that Rosemary Oil is suppose to help prolong a product! I also keep my Aloe Vera in the fridge! I have had my mix for months.......probably almost a year! I made a big mixture!
