Topic: Newly Vegetarian Side Effects? Posted: Oct 05 2011 at 5:29pm |

Yesterday I decided to cut out meat, fried foods etc. from my diet. I am a nutrition major, so I'm not concerned in the 'how' portion.
What I didn't expect were these bloody side effects. It's only been a day (pitiful I know) and I feel like crap. I have a constant headache, my stomach hurts, extremely nauseous and I'm tired. Before this I was eating burgers, fries and sweet tea everyday so I know I'm going through withdrawal. How did you combat these side effects if you experienced any?

Maybe you should rethink drastically changing your diet. I would consult my physician just to be on the safe side of things. My cousin ended up in the hospital (deathly ill) a few years after becoming a vegan and the doctor told her that the decline in her health was due to malnutrition. Basically her body lacked the vitamins and other things that people usually just from eating meat. You may need to start taking supplements but either way I recommend you speak to a physician just to be safe

Oh yes, I definitely remember the transition phase all too well. I've been veggie for about a year and a half now and my "withdrawal" lasted three days max. The best advice I could give you is to keep your water intake up. Your system is in essence detoxifying itself so lots of water should expedite the process. Also, please please please be sure to take a multivitamin and an iron supplement on top of that. On a veggie diet, we don't always get all our DVs. My doctor also recommended that I take a calcium supplement for bone support (just as a precautionary measure...). Overall, there's nothing better than just letting your body do its thing. Good luck!

This is common when people change their diets drastically. You're definitely going through caffeine withdrawal. And your body is detoxing all the acid buildup in your stomach from your meat consumption. You could experience these symptoms (and others) for weeks before you actually start to feel better. I'm no doctor, but I think it's best to wean yourself off those foods gradually. You'll be less likely to experience those symptoms and more likely to stick to the vegetarian lifestyle. But if you choose to continue the drastic change, just make sure maintain your proper nutrition intake and you should be fine.

Thanks everyone! I actually think I had food poisioing. Later on that night I started throwing up (sorry for the visual if it gave you one). Afterwards I felt better. I'm also going to look into multivitamins AND weening myself slowly into this lifestyle. It's odd because I know everything I'm supposed to do, but motivation is such a huge factor that I'm lacking. This weekend I went to visit family and regressed horribly.

When I weaned myself off meat, the only side effects I experienced was the extra gas.

You may experience those different effects when changing your diet. It's just your body realizing that you are making (positive) changes. All of those feelings should subside. When you remove meat and fried foods from your diet your body panics (so to speak) and starts looking for ways to eliminate those things that you are no longer feeding. Try replacing with more veggies and fruits and definitely water.
To your health!

You should do a cleanse to rid your body of everything and then start the vegetarian.
Beginners cleanse: 3 days only fruits and veggies 5 days only brown rice, fruits and veggies 7 days only fish, brown rice, fruits and veggies.
You will feel a difference and it is a good way to ween yourself off of meat.
I do this once very two years as maintenance although I am not a vegetarian I don't eat red meat or pork. I am currently doing the cleanse above but I am doing 6, 8, 10. It is great!
