Topic: Moving to NJ Posted: Jul 28 2011 at 10:00am |

I am moving to NJ this weekend to pursue a masters in Public Administration at Seton Hall University. As at now I will be living with family in Princeton but eventually I want to move closer to the school. I hear South Orange where Seton Hall is located is a bit rough so can someone recommend a towns/city that is a bit more nicer and closer to the school? Thanks

There is a part of Orange (I think West Orange) that is a pretty nice area from what I have seen when I had to do a few promo gigs out there..I'm guessing near the Whole Foods..around that area is good...but I believe Seton Hall is closer to NYC than it is Princeton...so you might be better off moving closer to North Jersey..like Montclair, Madison, Short Hills, Bloomfield and Belleville might fare you well...just understand that the nicer the area the more expensive. I lived in Bergen County very far North NJ near NYC and the neighborhoods were the best...the ones I mentioned above puts you further out but you are still in the north part of Jersey but you can possibly save some money. I would take the roommate route and it won't be hard to find a room to rent in those areas..they love renting to students too. Good luck! I really loved living in .

South Orange is very nice and does not have any rough neighborhoods (Seton Hall is on the South Orange/Newark Border, so when you heard about rough areas near the school, people were referring to the Newark streets that are @ 3-4 blocks from the Seton Hall campus).
West Orange has some very nice sections near the Livingston Border and a random weathy enclaves back in the cut (Whoopie Goldberg lives there) and also working class/labor class less desireable sections and Orange & East Orange are more rough and much less desirable. Hope this helps. There are a lot of small rental units available in South Orange right near campus and near a NYC direct train that goes to midtown Manhattan and if you will be working full time while in school, check out The Avenue which is a nice luxury apartment building 5 minutes from campus:
Good luck!

I have been living in South Orange since 1989 and I have been working at Seton Hall University since 2001, so when people say that Seton Hall can be a bit rough I kinda take offense to that, I think people have this idea that if you live in the suburbs that crime doesn't exist. The truth of the matter regardless of where you live criminal activity can occur, and the last time I check criminals do drive and sometimes they like to drive in the nice areas. So whether its Monclair or even Husdon County you need to have common sense to engage in behavior that may make you a victim of criminal activity. As far as cities to living South Orange, West Orange and Bloomfield are nice places that are close enough to the university.

yeah, South Orange is actually incredibly nice. It's the parts of Newark further down on South Orange Ave that are rougher. But I know a lot of people who've lived in South Orange for decades, and never had an incident. The dowtown area next to the train station is also super nice.

I went to seton hall and it is a nice town but there are a lot of crimes near the campus since Newark is right down the street and they prey on the dumb students walking alone late at night off campus. I had plenty of friends that live in the apartments in south orange and had no problems. My junior year I lived in a off campus dorm in newark called the university centre and I had no problems there. It's really nice but a tad bit expensive.

I work at Seton Hall and live in South Orange and its safe to me. A lot people make assumptions about a location because they assume that people are getting robbed left and right. Every city has crime you just need to aware of your surrondings and be smart no matter where you are...hood or country club living
