Topic: MICRO BRAIDS!!! (Share Tips, Pics, & Videos) Posted: Dec 15 2011 at 5:20pm |
Hello! I am 11 months natural. Lately I have been protective styling A LOT to help with growth & retention. I am trying my BEST to switch things up. Kinky twists have been my ALL-TIME favorite.....I did this during my transitioning stage and I have done this plenty of times during the months. I still LOVE during kinky twists but I want to mix things up. I am trying to learn how to do other styles as well. Next year I will be in a 6 month Protective Style Challenge & like I said before I want to mix things up.
Anyways......next year I am hoping to do kinky twists, puffy twists, crochet braids & micro braids. This post is suppose to be about micro braids, soooo enough about me. Anyone that does their own micro braids, please share your knowledge with me. I plan on using synthetic hair, the hair on the left. *Picture down below.* I did some test braids......& I washed the hair & applied gel.....so it should hold up even after 6-8 washes. I have noticed that the hair even looks a bit better. Also I plan on knotting the ends, about an inch or two after my own hair ends in the braid.
Share tips, pictures, and videos. Please & Thank you!!! I am sure that this post will help me as well as plenty of others.

My personal opinions: micros aren't great for growth because they require a LOT of babysitting to retain hair and growth. Synthetic hair is not good for micros and knotting would intensify issues. If you are doing real micros - a knot isn't necessary. Find a good oil blend for scalp. You will have to keep hair pretty much saturated with synthetic hair braids to prevent excessive buildup

Tips-I use bigger pieces of hair per micro around edges and sensitive or slow growth areas. I redo grown out areas religiously. I do hot oil treatments every 2 weeks and tend to wash weekly. I have used every variation of scalp oil , leave in or moisturizer I can find but still haven't found the perfect one. Also I never go past 2 months with micros and with natural hair I woul say probably 1 and 1/2 months is pushing it.

Also. I have used some of the beautiful curly and wavy synthetic braid hairs out now and noticed that the more you wash or wet the hair the more likely it is to clump together at the ends

From my own personal experience, when someone did my micros, they put nail glue at the end & when I took my hair out......my hair grew into the glue. So I ended up losing more then I gained? And if I'm not suppose to use a knot then what should I do instead?

already do that when I do my kinky twists. Have you tried Infusium 23
(for moisture).....I have been using that for such a long time & it
helps A LOT with moisture. & usually for my kinky twists I go 1 and
1/2 months, I re-do them & go another 1 and 1/2 months. I will have
to see how my natural hair will deal with the micros & see how long
it lasts.....lately it's been growing so much that I have to take the
style out because my roots start showing. I guess I should be happy
about that.

been clumping? Weird? Maybe its a blend or something? IDK? Or maybe it's
because I use gel after the washing? Anyways......another question?
What is some good human hair for doing micros?
Thank you for posting! & thank you for the advice & tips. It's greatly appreciated!!!

When I do my micros, they are so small that they don't unravel. I spritz a light coat of 24K holding spray over them and thats . I would never use glue or knots. I know the stupid salons use glue mainly. I have Infusium 23 leave in but it is water based. Im pretty sure it was due to the quality of synthetic hair I had. It was some brand I never heard of. it looked beautiful tho--was prob. clumping due to the low quality.

| It was an African braider that did my hair & put glue in it. I was relaxed & I didn't know any better......I thought that was how micros braids were suppose to be done? Thank you again for the tips.

Does any ladies have any certain hair that they would recommend for micro braids? Please provide the name, type, whether it's synthetic, human, or a mix/blend type of hair, how long it lasts, and any other information that would be important. Thank You in advance!
