Topic: Is protective styling necessary?? Posted: Feb 21 2012 at 8:41am |

So I'm growing out bad heat damage after a bad perm so in summer it will be my second bc (although this time I'll have at least 9 inches of new growth.) Anyways, what I'm asking is that for our hair to grow do we actually have to hide it? I mean can't mine hair grow by just taking care of it. Doing braid outs, bantu knots, etc. Co-washing and the occasional wash n go? I don't need to cornrow, box braids, wigs, etc. right? Or any style I could be stuck in for a while? Or is bantu, twists out considered protective styling? I mean after YEARS of wigs, lace fronts, and pressing. I kinda just want to wear my hair....all the time XD. In all its natural glory. Even better has anyone done it? Grow out there hair with little to no protective styling?

It isn't necessary BUT it is beneficial. If you keep your ends protected and moisturized then you should have no problem retaining length without protective styling.

Nope , your hair will grow regardless.
In my life I have had hair that reaches my ass and I have never done a protective style.
Just make sure you take care of it.

Well, i guess it depends on the individual. Just as some folks use supplementation/dieting and physical exercise to stay healthy and skinny and attain healthy hair. Where as some folks can eat a constant regimen of junk food, and still maintain a size one figure, and grow hair down to their ankles w/in a year.
I'm not one of the latter-types, thus, i have to utilize protective styling to not only grow my hair but to retain that growth due to low manipulation.

Most people who aim to grow their hair out do some form of protective styling at some point. Now, if you would rather wear your hair out without protective styling and sacrifice your ends alittle bit that's your option. I know I go through phases where I ONLY ps...sometimes (like now) I refuse to do it. It's not necessarily something that has to be static.
however...don't take for granted that your hair will be fine without any ps'ing.

This. I've compared growth to other ladies who have been natural around the same amt of time as I have and our lengths are the same or similar.

Ah thanks for the replies ladies. I think I'll just be doing braid outs, flexi-rods and what have you. Once my hair is long enough to bun I think that maybe the ONLY form of protective styling I might do(Just cuz I think buns are cute). Or hats. hats are cute too.

For me, it is definitely necessary, I can't retain length when I'm not in a protective style.
It's a shame it took me almost two years to figure that out .

I mean you dont HAVE to but i'm sure it helps. My hair loves when it's hidden under a weave, and when it's not I wear two bunned ponytails. Think chun li from street fighter. lol
