question: for the synthetic hair prep, will this mess up the curl pattern of the hair?

i think i want to take the plunge and braid my own hair. man it's hard being out here in japan with no one to do your hair. and when ask around people don't know who braid hair or they try to keep the info to themselves yeah it's crazy out here, but anywho...i have a general idea how to create individual braids, but i have a problem with parting, specifically in the back. how do you create a neat part? i twisted my hair a few weeks ago and man was it hard to part back there, but i managed to get through it without quitting lol! but any additional advice on self braiding is appreciated ladies! tia
