The haircare industry makes billions of dollars each year. Black women spend millions or more each year in the haircare industry. When many of us decided to go healthy and natural the industry stopped and listened. Now others, as usual are getting rich because of our consumer spending power. Fact is, a woman, especially a black woman is going to look good not matter her economic situation at the time. We will find a way.
For 20 plus years I worked in the cosmetic industry selling and promoting such lines as: Lauder, Clinique, LaPraire, Elizabeth Arden and Fashion Fair. During a time, where we pointed all the black women towards the Fashion Fair counter, because the lines above were not giving black women much thought. We had Fashion Fair and Flori Roberts. After a time the white cosmetic lines started to pay attention to the sisters of color beauty needs, and came out with their own color lines. And many black women jumped ship!
Let one of your New Years resolutions be to spend your money with black owned businesses especially small businesses. Sisters lets support people who put our hair care needs first. Stop supporting companies who only think of you as a after thought.
For 2012 promote and support black owned companies. Along our haircare journey we invest in lots or products, start making a effort to invest your money with black owned businesses, that provide quality products.
Use this thread to recommend black businesses that you know carry quality products, with good customer service. And make a extra effort to shop at black owned beauty supply stores. Others are becoming rich off of our spending, and look around your neighborhood, none of these folks live by you.
Products I recommend:
Taliah Waajid (Black Earth Products)
This sister was a natural stylist way before it was popular. She has been in the business for 25 plus years. She developed this line of products and she puts on the World Natural Hair Health & Beauty show every year in Atlanta, GA. I have used her hair gel for years but what I love is the Protective Mist Bodifer! Great product! You can find her products in most BSS stores. She is also a nice lady, I met her years ago when she first started the line.
BSS Stores I recommend:
Imans Beauty Supply store on the Plaza in Charlotte, NC.
(unfortunately in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC we have no African American owned BSS. But Imans is black owned by an Ethiopian family, and they are really nice and treat you well.)
