Topic: Back "in the day" fros! Posted: Jul 10 2009 at 11:38am |
Why does it seem like everyone back in the day (70s) had good, shapely, moisturized, afros!
Nowadays I have so much to choose from that i feel like ive lost all simplicity of getting great, healthy, and happy hair (Afro)
What did your parents do to achieive their gorgeous fros?

In the 1970's, many people just pressed their hair, many wasn't into the perming, relaxing, etc. My hair was so healthy when I pressed my hair and if I wanted an afro, I would just walk under water, lol. I think that is why you seen so much healthy hair back then.

Yea it would be nice if we knew what those products were. Pam Grier, Cooley High, and Shirley's fro on What's Happening were the bomb.

my pastor always tells stories of how he would use the soft hair rollers at night and pick it out with his metal pronged/black fist pick. my parents used to braid at night and pick out in the morning. they also used to have it shaped to keep it even. they gave me a lot of tips when i decided to go natural and started wearing my fro. a lot of tips and critiques when it wasn't on point, lol.

My mom used sta-sof-fro (still does lol) and a pick. My dad's hair wouldn't fro past a 2 inch diameter unless he braided it and used gel so he stayed lo-cut.

Yes, my mom used to braid it at night too and then pick it out in the morning.
So it's might look simple but less it true.

My mom would twist hers, put rollers on it, and pick it out in the morning

My mum used to braid hers at night and then pick it out in the morning. She had a GLORIOUS afro! Mine's almost as big as hers was!
