well I don't think you can stop EVERY single one because curly hair is prone to this. But you can reduce them by keeping your hair stretched and washing in sections/braids and drying in braids. Hope that helps :3

^^^^put your hair in braids or twists...or you can blow it out (if you don't mind heat) or straighten it (if you don't mind scorching heat)....basically, you do not allow the hair to curl onto itself or its neighbor(s).

and don't pull out the knots.  cut them off with shears.  when you pull them out, you can creat split ends.

^^^^yeah, sometimes when you feel one...you just want it gone!  so you pull...that's why people actually carry ard shears with them....if they feel a knot, they can get rid of it properly...lol i'm not there yet.  i just TRY to ignore it until i get home...then snip it goes!

Keeping it stretched and well moisturised works for me. I rarely use heat so I braid it or do South African plaits like these when I wash it & I also air dry it like that. I keep it like this all week under my wigs:

You get a great textured effect, similar to twist outs(too much time and effort for me) when you finger pick it out. So much so that I don't see the need for blow-outs. We use cut up stockings tied into long strings or wool(drenched in moisturiser/spray) in a pinch.

The pics are from an awesome South African blog called FroChic, run by 2 natural ladies. The last pic is a vintage shot of one of the blogger's mom's from the 70s. So fly!
